We are delighted that Narmin Ismail, Founder and CEO of The Spark of Hope Foundation, was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal (M.S.M.) by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, in 2021. The presentation ceremony was held at Rideau Hall on March 21, 2024, where a total of 64 recipients were honoured.

The Meritorious Service Decorations (Civil Division) was Created by Queen Elizabeth II to recognize great Canadians for an exceptional deed they accomplished over a limited period that brings honour to Canada. It honours activities or deeds that are innovative, set an example or model for others to follow, or improve the quality of life in a community. It recognizes remarkable contributions in many different fields of endeavour, from advocacy initiatives and health care services, to research and humanitarian efforts. Past recipients have tackled poverty in their community, improved education opportunities for children in Canada and abroad, or raised awareness of important causes and issues. It is one of the highest distinctions a Canadian civilian can receive.

Narmin said: “I am humbled to be acknowledged for the achievements of The Spark of Hope Foundation. This award is a tribute to the bright women, primarily from areas of conflict and remote areas, who overcome great challenges and work exceptionally hard to successfully obtain a high-quality university education, so that they can be the next generation of women leaders.”

She went on to add: “In the span of a decade, the Foundation has supported 245 students, including 180 alumnae and 65 current students at the undergraduate, graduate, PhD and professional levels, from 34 countries. They have attended 68 institutions in 23 countries. It is a tribute to their courage, resilience, and leadership qualities that in such a short time, many are already beginning to make an outstanding impact in their communities.”
And above all, she continued, “our scholar success is underpinned by the support of our very generous donors, successive Board Chairs and Directors and numerous volunteers, for which I am enormously grateful.”
