Overview
The Spark of Hope Foundation (SoHF) supports exceptional women from the Global South and areas of conflict to complete university degrees. Our scholars have already earned admission to university but face a funding gap that can pose a significant barrier. SoHF helps close that funding gap and pairs the funding with structured, ongoing support through graduation and into early career steps, converting opportunity into compounding impact.
Education is not an end in itself. It is a catalyst for leadership, institutional influence, and long-term social progress. When a highly-capable woman completes her degree, the benefits extend beyond individual advancement to families, workplaces, and communities.

How the model works
Why the model works
Capital efficient. Selective. Compounding impact.
SoHF is designed for capital efficiency. Relatively modest philanthropic dollars are leveraged by larger institutional investments already committed to an admitted scholar. This approach produces strong outcomes because it is built on three reinforcing advantages:
1. Institutional leverage is multiplied: University and partner support means applicants often have most of their funding secured before SoHF steps in. These partnerships help multiply the effect of every donor dollar by 5x on average.
2. Risk is reduced: Scholars are already academically vetted through admissions decisions and trusted partner shortlisting. SoHF then applies its own selection criteria and retention support, contributing to a 98% graduation rate.
3. Long-term impact compounds: With their education, scholars are positioned to influence systems – clinics, classrooms, research labs, policy institutions, businesses, and civil society organizations. Alumnae then mentor and support fellow scholars, widening impact over time.
Where we work
35 countries of origin
27 countries of study
SoHF focuses on scholars from the Global South, conflict-affected regions, and remote communities across 35 countries. The contexts they come from are not obstacles to their leadership—they are the source of it.
Their studies take them to 27 countries, at institutions across Canada, the United States, Europe, and Asia. Scholars have studied at Aga Khan University, American University of Beirut, Asian University for Women, Brown University, Duke University, Sciences Po, Université Laval, University of Alberta, University of Central Asia, and University of Lausanne, and 70 other respected institutions.
Talent is globally distributed. SoHF makes sure opportunity follows.

Partnerships are key
Finding the next generation of leaders
Most scholars arrive through our university or other on-ground partners who carefully select applicants for shortlisting. These applicants have already met rigorous admission standards and have substantial funding commitments from the partner institution. SoHF has a comprehensive application, interview and selection process that looks for academic excellence, leadership experience and potential, and a clear plan for impact.
SCHOLAR SUPPORT
Funding is just the start. Every scholarship includes:
Financial support: We help fund tuition, required fees, essential living costs, books, academic expenses and all the costs that are necessary for the scholar to obtain her degree.
A dedicated point of care: A Scholar Liaison Officer is a steady presence throughout a scholar’s studies and beyond. Someone who knows her situation, tracks her progress, and can help talk through issues a scholar might have – before they become crises.
Further opportunities: SoHF supports funding for subsequent degrees that scholars may pursue, investing further in a scholar’s long-term success.
A network that lasts: Scholars graduate into a community of alumnae who mentor, refer, and advocate for the women rising behind them. The support continues through her lifetime.
